4 ingredient Macaroni and Cheese Instant Pot Recipe

Who doesn't love macaroni and cheese? It is a great comfort food in our family.  My 4 Ingredient Instant Pot Macaroni and Cheese contains elbow macaroni, butter, evaporated milk, and your choice of Sharp or Mild Cheddar cheese (I use Sharp Cheddar cheese). It makes a very creamy macaroni and cheese that everyone in my household loves and we think yours will too.




Ingredients - Serves 8


1 lbs of elbow macaroni

4 1/2 cups of water

1 tsp of salt

2 TBSP of butter

1 (12 oz ) can of evaporated milk

32 oz of grated sharp or mild cheddar cheese *See Notes

ground pepper  to taste  


1. Combine the macaroni, water and salt in your Instant Pot. Stir the macaroni then add the butter. Lock the lid into place and be sure the vent valve is closed. Set the pressure cooking time for 6 minutes on HIGH pressure. 


2. Once the cooking time completes, click cancel and do a QR (Quick Release is to open the vent valve and let the pressure out), then carefully remove the lid away from your face to prevent getting burned. 


3. Stir in the macaroni to break up any clumps. If any water remains be sure to drain the pasta. Allow the pasta to cool for 1 minute, then press the saute button. Add the cheddar cheese in large handfuls. Stir after each addition of cheese that is being added. After the last addition of cheese that is being added stir it very well until it is creamy. Then turn off the Instant Pot and remove the pot (this will prevent the cheese from overcooking and getting grainy).  


4. Taste your macaroni and cheese and salt and pepper it to your liking and enjoy! 


*Recipe Notes


I personally grate my own cheese for this recipe and I recommend this process. It is a little more time consuming vs buying pre packaged shredded cheese, but it does have its benefits to shredding it yourself. It is usually cheaper to buy the block of cheese vs pre packaged shredded cheese, but also pre grated cheese is coated in a starch that can make this recipe on the dry side, clump and a little grainy. You don't want to compromise texture over a few minutes of shredding the cheese yourself. Sharp cheddar is the best because using sharp (which is our families favorite) tends to make this macaroni and cheese recipe a little to dry as well.
